A Social Venture Company
Heritage
As the dynamic and visionary CEO & founder of Broken Pieces International, Ms. Henrietta White-Holder, have always incorporated her unique sense of creative prowess and love of distinctive aesthetics, in all facets of her life. In using her authentic voice, she exudes that rare talent, which permits her to use her creativity, dogged determination and can-do spirit to accomplish whatever she sets her mind to. Broken Pieces was conceived in 2008, under the auspices of our non-profit NGO Higher Ground International, which she created after an unrelenting need to do something, to make a difference in the lives of young people who had endured 14 years of civil war in her birth country, Liberia and her paternal grandmother’s native country, Sierra Leone.
Our Story
In 1989 , a series of civil wars broke out in the West Africa region of Liberia and Sierra Leone.Thousands of children were stolen from their families; they were raped, beaten, drugged and indoctrinated to become child soldiers. They were used as pawns to torture, maimed and pillage the citizens of these countries to support a diamond and weapons trade and hence further fuel a series of civil wars, which brought no benefit to them. These wars lasted for 14 years, leaving in their wake significant consequences for the lives of countless numbers of children…
In being true to our non-profit Higher Ground International’s vision to create an environment of peace and respect for young people in West Africa, a place where children will no longer be victimized and exploited to fight in wars, and to pay homage to the millions of lives around the world, who have been explicitly broken because of the madness of war, Broken Pieces international, was created as a means of providing economic sustainability and empowerment to the families and youth in the village communities, who have been affected by the tragic years of civil wars in that part of the world.
Broken Pieces is a mission-driven for- profit social venture, offering an eclectic mix of modern-vintage apparels and products that is the revenue generating stream that fuels the development and support of our non-profit NGO, Higher Ground International’s residential, life-skills and job creation scheme to support families and youth in West Africa and those who have immigrated to the US. In being socially responsible and focused on the environment in which we live and work, Broken Pieces is particularly mindful to create products that are eco-friendly and focused on helping the people of the communities become empowered to regain their dignity, as they become a part of something bigger. The company’s name “Broken Pieces,” speaks of the devastation and madness of war that the people of West Africa faced for decades. This is our way, of "Giving Back," and paying homage, to honor their lives; as we help them become whole, in putting those pieces back together.
Broken Pieces is Simply: Beautiful. Powerful. Distinctive!
